From the Taisho to early Showa periods many painters, poets, designers, and other artists gathered in the Ikebukuro neighborhoods of Kanamecho, Shiinamachi, and Minami-Nagasaki and it was affectionately known as Ikebukuro Montparnasse.

During the COVID-19 pandemic under which travel has been limited, there have been efforts to increase local cultural activities. This exhibition by artists Yusuke Asai, Natsuki Takayama, Erina Matsui, and Goro Murayama harkens back to the original Ikebukuro Montparnasse in its attempt to do so.
