Gallery Naruyama gives 4 artists the chance to give their point of view on next year's Chinese zodiac sign, the Dog.
It is an ancient custom to display the zodiac sign at the end and beginning of each year; it is believed to bring good luck. The modern-day mascot craze in Japan possibly has its origins in this belief. When your own sign is still 7 years away, this year's sign is called your "opposite sign". In that case, it is said that collecting ornaments of your opposite sign brings good luck and wealth. The opposite sign of Dog being Dragon, visiting this exhibition could prove to be a very auspicious opportunity for those born in the year of the Dragon. By focusing on old traditions like these, Gallery Naruyama aims to explore and develop new perspectives.
Fuyuko Matsui's frighteningly elegant Borzoi dog of last April, with its passionately long hair and nails, is still deeply engraved in our memory. Tsuchiya Yoshimasa from Tokyo Art Fair is also present, showcasing his "Parlor Dog", which symbolizes "directionless craving of man, and the strength of life". Tohru Kamei created his dog with the smell of symbolist Meiji oil paintings in his nose. And Masahiro Habuchi made good use of his long experience and skills in dyeing to make his own version of next year's zodiac sign. Woof!
