Ryo Hamada Exhibition

Media: Photography, Other
Originally a painter, Hamada later found it more comfortable to express himself through photography. Hamada's photographs are like ambiguous visual experiences that transcend records and become memories, thus demanding the viewers to come up with conceptual answers by awakening their own memories.
Hamada takes snapshopts of sceneries, and finalizes his works by making photocopies, putting them on panels, and painting over them. As a result, the subjects disappear and the layers of colors talk to viewers in a new language. He also takes portraits, that once photocopied and sandwiched in semi-clear films conceal the identiy of the subjects.
His latest series, started in 2003, include photographs covered with milk-white acrylic plates, in an effort to widen his range of visual ambiguity-trick skills.
