Stephen Balkenhol - Skulpturen und Reliefs
This event has ended.
At Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery
Media: Sculpture
Stephen Balkenhol (1957~) is one of the leading contemporary sculptors in Germany and has produced an important collection of wooden sculptures of figures and animals motifs. He chips off the wood leaving rough gouge marks and paints over them. Balkenhol's figures and their pedestals are carved out from one piece of wood, there is no elaborate or great big movements, they just stand mute and quiet. Accompanying those sculptures are "Mr. Everyman", average people with ordinary clothes, they could be anyone or no one. At first glance, those are classic scuptures without any characteristics that could be considered novel, but there is a unique ordinariness that leaves a lasting impression.
The beauty of these representational sculptures has captured people in the United States and Europe but has hardly been introduced in Japan.
As part of a cultural program of 2005 and 2006 introducing German culture in Japan, this exhibition is a full-scale introduction of approximately 50 of his sculpture and relief works produced from 1990 to the present.
