This exhibition brings together the work of 13 people from different fields; not just contemporary artists but manga artists, HIV prevention activists, disabled artists and others.
During the 1990s, Japan suffered the bursting of the economic bubble, terrorism and natural disasters. As a result, people lost their trust in the economy, religion and nature, and their values changed. It became hard to envision the future as something overflowing with possibility and positivity. At the same time, people - in particular those of the younger generations - became more and more used to the virtual world in their computer screens and gradually became prone to losing their grasp of life and reality. This was also the time when Japanese manga and anime spread out into the world and works made in a mass-cultural style were very well received overseas as a form of Japanese contemporary art. Hence, Art Tower Mito has in recent years held exhibitions of manga figures and grafitti as an attempt to desconstruct and reconstruct our perceptions of concepts surrounding art and the museums in which it is displayed.
