Along with make-up and fashion, perfume and aromatherapy have become parts of our every day lives. The history of perfume is even said to go back as much as 4000 years. In the 19th century, Emile Galle, one of the key figures in the Art Nouveau movement, was making small perfume bottles and as technology improved drastically in Europe from the 19th to the 20th century, perfume which was previously an exclusive product became widely popularized. This was the period which saw the establishment of the famous perfume makers who continue to work today.
However, it is also said that because of its Buddhist heritage, perfume has been an age-old feature of Japanese culture, which developed its use for high-class society to the same extent as in Europe.
This exhibition introduces the distinctive perfume containers of Japanese culture. During the exhibition period, on every Saturday there will be lectures relating to perfume, entitled "Making Perfume, Getting Close to Perfume".

Oh My Buddah, Perfume Bottles.

Anyone, who has ever unwrapped a piece of pastry from a combini store and thrown away the content, but played with the fascinating wrapping, will imagine what a joy it is to go a perfume vessel show.
