This is Swiss artist Emmanuelle Antille’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo. The show will present “Kill me twice, dear friend, dear enemy” from “Tornadoes of My Heart” and is being held simultaneously with Tokyo Wondersite Shibuya.
The exhibition title, “Tornadoes of my heart” is the generic title of a new body of work including three video installations, a series of thirty photographs and a feature film. In this whole project, the artist developed the theme of teenagehood through its various aspects: codes and rituals, diary, language, friendship, family and relationship inside a community.
For this project, Antille worked for one year with the teenagers acting in the videos. She spent time with them and their families, listened to their stories, met their friends and trained them for acting. All these preparation phases, close to the way of making a documentary film, brought a lot to the project and created a very strong intimacy that could be felt afterwards in the final images.
This installation, “Kill me twice, dear friend, dear enemy”, is composed of two video projections presenting two seventeen-year old boys, two friends who have gone for a walk in the middle of nowhere. The videos work as portraits revealing the very specific nature of their relationship and these images are shown together with a recurrent sequence of a tornado. This installation places the viewer directly in the heart of this “love/hate” relationship, deep inside this exclusive friendship at the specific moment where the two teenagers’ lives are about to change forever, where through death the two of them will become a whole and unique body.
