Contemporary Japanese paintings are sometimes categorized as being either Nihonga (Japanese paintings) or Western style paintings. This categorization started in the Meiji Era and has been adopted by the art world since. However, this perception actually carries many problems, and this exhibition will take a look at the parallel existence of these two categories from a historical viewpoint: in other words, rethinking the concepts 'contemporary', 'Japan', and 'art'. To get a larger picture of Japan's art history, this exhibition focuses on artists and works that are regarded to be at the halfway point of Nihonga and Western style paintings.

そういえば日本画と洋画は揺らいでるよなぁと改めて思った。ホントにいまは日本画と洋画の区切りが曖昧になってるって当たり前過ぎて気付かないけど、当時にしてみればセンセーショナルで、当時の画家たちが試行錯誤してたのがすごく伝わってくる。狭間ポイントを見つけながら、絵画が生まれた過程を追うのが面白かった。でも日本画と洋画っていう区別がいまもなくなってないって事は、画家がそのどちらかに自分の作品のよりどころみたいなのを求めてるからじゃないのかなあ。だから「日本画」「洋画」は将来もずっとある気がした。
