Henri Rivière encountered Japonism in late 20th century in the Cafe "Chat Noir" renowned for its avant garde and intellectual clientele and creative interaction between them. From then on the artist carried out a thorough research of Japanese art, especially Hokusai and Hiroshige, and became a key figure in the revival of wood block prints and multi-colour lithographs.
The exhibition will present the series "36 views of the Eiffel Tower" which clearly alludes to Hokusai's "36 views of Mt. Fuji". The lithographs and the two attempts at wood block prints depict the construction process of the tower.
In addition to the series, works by artists Georges Auriol and Henri-Charles Guerard will also be exhibited.
