Shigeo Toya "Minimalbaroque"
This event has ended.
At Shugoarts
Media: Sculpture, Installation
Toya was born in Nagano in 1947, and currently lives and works in Saitama, Japan. In this exhibition, he uses a chainsaw to cut up chunks of trees. The surfaces thus created visually transmit an impression of tactile pain to the viewer.
Despite the end of minimalism in the 1960s, Toya keeps approaching sculpture from that angle and continues to produce bold works. He crystallizes into his own expression the traditional concepts of sculpture.
“Minimalbaroque” is a coinage by Toya. An oxymoron, the fruit of his trying to merge both minimal and baroque elements in his works. He is not just an onlooker but is keen on living through the contradictions.
