Among the giants who left their mark within the earliest days of graphic design in Japan, Yoshio Hayakawa is especially remarkable in that today he continues to enthrall us with works of fresh appeal. Born in Osaka in 1917, Hayakawa spent the postwar years working as a designer for department stores, created exciting new posters and advertisements that today have become legendary: works that quickly propelled Hayakawa to the center stage of the graphic design realm of the Kansai region. Since relocating to Tokyo in the 1960s, he has been active in a broad spectrum of areas including corporate posters, advertising, illustration and book design. His abundant works, all born from his brilliance in design and color sense, have had a powerful influence on Japanese graphic design as we know it today.
For this full-scale retrospective exhibition in Tokyo, the spotlight is focussed on Hayakawa’s early activities. The aim is to provide a new profile of a kind never discussed before.
In conjunction with this exhibition, ggg is publishing a fifth special volume in its gggBooks series dedicated to Yoshio Hayakawa. It contains an autobiographical essay, Hayakawa’s views toward design, and a discussion of Hayakawa and his works by Kijuro Yahagi (in Japanese).
