Ichiro Fukuzawa (1898-1992) was born in Gunma Prefecture. He entered Tokyo Teikoku University (current University of Tokyo) to study literature, but immediately started studying art under sculptor Fumio Asakura. In 1922, his work was selected in a large exhibition called Teiten. After the Great Kanto Earthquake occurred the next year, he left for Paris in 1924. Fukusawa began his practice in sculpture, but he became more interested in painting after he moved to Paris. He exhibited at Salon d'automne and other major shows, expanding his career. Fukusawa returned to Japan in June 1931 and in 1939, he established the Bijutsu Bunka Art Association. In the midst of his productive activity, he was arrested for an offense against the highly restrictive Law for Maintenance of the Public Peace in 1941 and restrained for six months. However, after the war ended he became actively involved in art again and was recognized as a leader in the art world. He also taught at Tama Art University and Joshibi University of Art & Design for a long period.
This exhibition features works created between his days in Paris and the post-war period, exploring his unique vision of art.
