"The Jewels of Tiffany" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum
Media: Fashion, Crafts, Art Talk
The Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum is the former residence of Prince Asaka. Completed in 1933, the building is a prime example of the Art Deco style and the Teien Art Museum has mounted numerous decorative arts exhibitions. In contrast to more contemporary galleries, the elegant art deco interiors of the museum create a unique ambiance that beautifully highlights the artistry on display.
This exhibition introduces the design legacy of America’s most celebrated jeweler. Founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany in New York in 1837, Tiffany & Co. started as a "stationery and fancy goods emporium." Under the direction of its ingenious and enterprising founder, the company rose to prominence at the international expositions of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, winning the Grand Prix and a host of other prizes - not to mention an international reputation. The ingenious and characteristic designers who played leading roles were Paulding Farnham, the chief designer, and Louis Comfort Tiffany, the son of the founder and also defining figure as a stained glass designer. Initially influenced by the traditions of European jewelry making, Tiffany went on to utilize American materials, design and technology to create a new and uniquely refined style of jewelry. To say that the history of Tiffany & Co. is the history of American jewelry is no exaggeration. Jean Schlumberger, Elsa Peretti, Paloma Picasso, architect Frank Gehry and other designers joined and have been creating the new legend of Tiffany. The 1961 movie, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, which starred Audrey Hepburn, helped to make Tiffany & Co. a truly worldwide name, and one that continues to fascinate people throughout Japan. Though Tiffany is very well known with silverware and stationery and those have been exhibited in museums in Japan, this is the first exhibition in Japan which focuses only on the jewelry and accessories by Tiffany. Approximately 200 jewelry designs and accessories from the Tiffany & Co. Archives, including the Tiffany Diamond in the magnificent “Bird on a Rock” setting designed by Jean Schlumberger will be on display. Of the items on view, there are pieces that have never been seen in Japan.
Launched at the Gilbert Collection, Somerset House in London, the exhibition is now traveling around the world. With the full cooperation of the Tiffany & Co. Archives, The Jewels of TIFFANY introduces the company’s glittering 170-year history through almost 200 pieces of jewelry.
