At Kamakura Gallery
Media: Painting

This artist used wood and iron scraps to create sculptures. He was highly acclaimed for giving birth to an original art form rooted in folk customs and local cultures in a time when Japan had been aiming to imitate Western modernization. As such, his works are considered as an early example of Asiatic sensitivity expressed in contemporary art. This exhibition marks the 20th anniversary of his death.

The titles of his later works "Bon" and "Miarei" mean "purity" and "Rebirth of God" in Sanskrit. He expressed his apologetic feelings toward nature by using wood scraps and iron scraps that were waste from human civilization.
