At Nanzuka Underground
Media: Photography, Sculpture, Video installation

Seeing himself as a product of the high-speed information and consumer-capitalist age, Naohiro Ukawa ironically tags himself as the "media rapist", working not only as a contemporary artist but also as a designer, art director, film-maker, VJ, sound system artist, writer and curator, also giving lectures at universities. His irrepressible creativity is a reflection of the diversity of Japanese subculture, but also suggests the possibilities for redefining a new conception of what art is.

This exhibition presents a sequence of photos and video works inspired by earthquakes and natural disasters, as well as sculptural works that incorporate everyday items destroyed by natural disasters. Typhoons, earthquakes, tsunami, volcanoes and other such natural disasters create physical, economic and psychological damage, but the artist sees them also as an opportunity for new beginnings.

There are several talks planned in conjunction with this exhibition. More details will be released on the gallery website nearer the time.

Japan Times Art Brief
By Samantha Sinnayah

By presenting us with what might have happened inside two imagined interiors — a cluttered living room and a playfully stereotypical office (complete with sexual tension), Ukawa hints at the superficiality of consumption-driven lifestyles ...
