"Circus" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Seiji Togo Memorial Sompo Japan Museum of Art
Media: Painting, Prints
The history of the circus goes back to 1770s in England, and later, a variety of types of circus came out of France, Germany, and America. In Japan, starting with the Risley circus group in 1864, many groups started to tour.
In Europe, the Impressionists responded to the life of circus performers, producing paintings of acrobatic figures. The artists featured in this exhibition, such as Picasso, Matisse, Rouault, Chagall, Léger, Klee, Buffet, and Calder felt a sense of closeness to performer's lives, and were attracted by them. When Sotaro Yasui, Seiji Togo, Kinosuke Ebihara, and Kiyoshi Hasegawa visited France, they were heavily influenced by the works by those artists. Artists such as Toshiyuki Hasegawa, Hide Kawanishi, Koshiro Onchi, and Ei-Kyu also created works with themes on circus.
This exhibition includes a total of 90 works by 9 foreign, and 18 Japanese artists.
