Kurita and Yorigami, who both graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, are based in the western Kansai area of Japan and have exhibited internationally in New York and Amsterdam. This exhibition is their first in Tokyo. Kurita's paintings incorporate elements of collage to create striking figurative compositions. Past series have included delicate renderings of sushi pieces accented by a stray Godzilla figure, or an arrangement of dishes at an izakaya that suggest a portrait of a night out with friends. Using material such as clothes and fabrics to make installations, Yorigami will display a life-size photograph of a floor carpet. Her works reinvent daily life through imaginary narratives that develop out of her material choices.
