Born in Tochigi Prefecture in 1890, Kangen Ishikawa studied western painting in Tokyo when he was 19 but due to illness he had to return to the countryside, where he stopped painting for two years. It wasn't until he was 30 that he returned to Tokyo to paint and adopt the Nanga style of Southern School of Chinese painting. He died during World War II.
In 1985, Tochigi Prefectural Museum of the Arts held an exhibition of his work to commemorate the 50 years since his death, which led him to become a recognized figure. This retrospective exhibition introduces the whole range of his works from the early period to his later masterpieces.
