Media: Painting, Art Talk

This is the first retrospective in Japan of self-taught British artist Alfred Wallis (1855-1942). Wallis was a mariner before he started painting at the age of 70. His work was discovered when artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood happened to pass by Wallis' St Ives home in 1928, where his paintings hung on the walls. Wallis' paintings depict scenes reminiscent of his past life, such as steamboats, sailboats, lighthouses, and the port and town of St Ives. Often painted on cardboard with paint normally used for ships, they are filled with a rustic atmosphere that contemporary art seems to have lost.

80 paintings and sketches from the collections of Cambridge University and Tate Britain, and 10 from the personal collections of Nicholson and Wood will be on display to offer a full overview of the life and works of this artist. The romantic seascapes, adorable animals and birds, and small houses of St Ives will be sure to capture the hearts of many people.
