At Museum of Modern Art, Ibaraki
Media: Painting, Art Talk

Matazo Kayama honed his craft in the turbulent period after the war. In his early years, he painted birds and animals in a style strongly influenced by Surrealism and Cubism. In the late 50s, he returned to traditional Japanese paintings and studied Yamato paintings and Rinpa, for which he received high praise. He took painting nudes as his lifework, and in the 70s he developed his style to include the deep spirituality of Indian ink paintings.

In 2003, Kayama was awarded the Order of Merit in recognition of his contribution to post-war art in Japan, which raised the bar for Japanese senses and Asian traditions. He passed away the following year at the age of 76. This exhibition will display Kayama's body of work in its entirety.
