Masaru Tabei, is a young artist known for his interactive installations. In this exhibition we will show “Wakuraba,” an installation using cobble stone, and one of his smaller pieces “Ibuki".

"Wakuraba" is an installation with a unique gimmick, where the stones move with a time lag as if they were following one's footsteps. A feeling of synchronization emerges between the sounds of the actual footsteps, and the sounds of the stones following. It is also a sentient piece, as one can feel the foot as it pushes into the sheet of stones. The stones, which memorize footsteps, will move continuously until the next person steps on it. The following person will have a choice to either look at a vestigial image or to listen to the steps that have been taken. One of the concepts is to create a ‘wakuraba = an unexpected encounter’ remotely between the previous and the posterior through the experience of this installation.

The artist also thinks of encountering the stone itself before encountering an imaginary image of the previous person. The stone acts as a medium for unexpected encounters.
As “Ibuki” shows using hi-technological tools, Tabei visualizes why stones were considered sacred objects in ancient times and also the power exchanged between humans and objects as they harmonize. Tabei’s art works are truly enjoyable and unique, however at the same time expresses the vague, two-sided world we live in today.
