"The Resurrection of the Tale of Genji Emaki Scrolls" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Sogo Museum of Art
Media: Painting, Other
A century after Murasaki Shikibu wrote The Tale of Genji, in the late Heian Period (12th Century), the national treasure of the "Tale of Genji Emaki Scrolls" were made. Said to be the oldest scrolls in existence, 28 poems and 5 pictures are stored at the Tokugawa Art Museum and 9 poems and 4 pictures are stored at the Gotoh Museum. Due to the fading of colours, there is no trace left of the original images. People simply have to imagine what the figures of that era looked like.
However, with the progression of science in recent years, X-ray and colour pigment analysis techniques have made it possible to rediscover these images, leading to the rediscovery of meaning in many emaki scrolls. This exhibition presents reproductions of some of these ancient artifacts, together with other reproductions of works made between the Edo period and today.
