200 years have passed since the birth of Diaz (Narcisse Virgilio Díaz de la Peña), known for paintings of the fête galante (gallant party), and daily scenes that show oriental influences. Diaz had a background in academic research on paintings, and created paintings influenced by Romanticism. He began to be recognized for his gorgeous painting style based on the trendy Orientalism of his time. Later, he visited Barbizon village where he studied under Rousseau. His Romantic painting style shifted to the Naturalistic, and he developed his career to be one of the seven leading stars of the Barbizon school. This exhibition includes works representing each style that he practiced, in addition to works by his comrades from the Barbizon school, and Monticelli and Renoir, who were influenced by his work.
