Miyajima's painting incorporates elements that resemble those found in European modern painting by artists such as Klee, Miro, Mondrian and Kandinsky, while also borrowing motifs that recall local scenery from Showa-era Japan, producing a unique hybrid type of work that blends these myriad elements filtered through the artist's somewhat naive and unironic sensibilities. Miyajima's work deftly reflects undercurrents of latent consciousness from the period of rapid economic growth in Japan during which he grew up right up until today.
Miyajima was previously known for the fantastic worlds depicted in the "Tales of Curious Paintings" (omnibus of the "Painting and Stories" series featured serially in the monthly publication "Art Window"), but this exhibition showcases work of his that stems from a more deeply-considered sensibility. The title of this exhibition, "Eels from Hamamatsu," was taken from an impression of a series of work about Japanese bullet trains and lunch boxes sold at train stations. The "Hikari" and "Kodama" bullet trains here recall the nostalgic descriptions of these trains as the stuff that "super-express dreams" used to be made of.
Recently, Miyajima has focused his work on the theme of food in consumer culture and lifestyles, the expanding and rapidly progressing sphere of defence towards "Heisei", and memories of infancy, fusing folkloric motifs and scenes of contemporary life, reflecting the quiet and unassuming vernacular character of casual everyday life in "first-world" Japan.
