Chagall was born to a Jewish family in Vitebsk, a city in western Russia, after which he moved successively to Moscow, Berlin, Paris and New York. He availed himself of a spectacular palette of color in his work, coupled with an imagination that knew no limitations, constantly dreaming up pictorial worlds that transcended art and appeared to approach the sublime. The violinists, villagers, wedding ceremonies and festivals, cows, goats and chickens that populate his work were subjects taken from his lingering childhood memories in Vitebsk.
