Takashi Azumaya was born in Mie Prefecture in 1968. Ever since he was a student at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music, Azumaya has been creating performance pieces and photographic documentations of himself, winning acclaim from some curators and critics. However, he stopped working as an artist in 1994 and began working instead at the Setagaya Art Museum, mainly as an assistant curator for Yuko Hasegawa. During those five years at the museum, he vigorously curated a series of events and exhibitions of performance art and video art. After that, he worked as a curator at Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery, led an initiative on the performance art section for the Yokohama Triennale 2001, and worked for the Mori Art Museum. Today, he works as an independent curator. His major curatorial projects include the Gundam exhibition (at the Suntory Museum Tempo-zan, and the Ueno Royal Museum), and his current job as a curator for the 2008 Pusan Biennale. His activities are not limited to curatorial practice alone. He is also active in DJ-ing and making and showing his own art. He presented his work at Geisai Museum 2 last month.
While Azumaya has extensive experience as a curator, he "mysteriously" disappeared for 6 months starting last October. He completely shut himself off from the art world and there was a rumor that he was dead.
This exhibition explains why he distanced himself from literally everything for those six months. At the same time, viewers encounter the dark side of society today through his work.
Azumaya's work as presented in this exhibition was made through collaborative efforts with artists Kazuhiko Hachiya, Shunya Tsunoda, Yasunori Ikunishi, Fuyuki Yamakawa, and editor Kenichi Abe. With this work, Azumaya makes his full-blown comeback as an artist, resisting easy categorization.
