On April 1st 1945, around 548,000 American troops and 1500 battleships landed on the central western coast of the main island of Okinawa. This attempt to capture Okinawa was nicknamed Operation Iceberg. Okinawa was the only battlefield on home territory in Japan where blood was spilled during WWII.
This exhibition is the second part of the "Uchinaguchi: Okinawan" exhibition held in 2005, featuring some 30 color works and 15 black and white works by Onuma, who tracked down old battlefields based on the testimonies of survivors of the war.
