Coral reefs are ocean's treasure house and the mother of sea life forms. In August 2007, a huge scale coral bleaching took place for the first time in 9 years in Ishigaki Island, where 55% of Japanese coral reefs inhabit. After turning white, the coral reefs died, turned black, fell apart, and eventually turned into rubble. The artist decided to capture this shocking event. The coral reefs got bleached due to global warming: because sea temperature went up to 30 degrees and stayed on that level for a few days, zooxanthella, which had provided the corals with nutrients and vibrant colors, left them, turning their color into white. This exhibition features 33 color photographs the artist took in the northern part of Ishigaki Island before and after the bleaching occurred.
