The Hitotsubo exhibition is a competition with neither prizes not award winners. Instead, it serves as a platform and opportunity for expression in support of the continued activities of young, passionate artists. Started in 1992, Hitotsubo marked its 30th edition this spring. There have been 566 participants who exhibited their work within the confines of a hitotsubo space (1.82 square meters) in the graphics and photography categories. These 566 artists were selected after a strict first-round screening process during which the judges painstakingly went through the files of each applicant and discussed their choices thoroughly. Most of the selected artists are now active in their respective fields. This exhibition commemorates the 30th installment of the Hitotsubo exhibition, training the spotlight once again on these artists.
This exhibition showcases about 200 postcards, each of which were designed by one of selected designers in the graphic art category. Some of these works even transcend the typical flat 2D format of a regular postcard. Bearing the visitors to the exhibition in mind, some artists have also produced postcard-sized works for the show, each bearing a message from the artist. Also held over the duration of the exhibition is an auction offering works for sale, proceeds of which will go to support the continued activities of these young artists. In addition, new and old works alike by the chosen Hitotsubo artists will be on display in portfolios. Finally, a commemorative publication that compiles grand prize works from the 1st through to the 30th edition of the competition, works by each of the selected artists, reports from judges and comments from judges and participants alike will be produced and offered for sale.
