The Shizuoka Prefectural Museum of Art collects mostly landscape paintings from the 17th century and after, but as one would expect, the most emblematic landscape of them all in Shizuoka is that of Mount Fuji. Naturally, the collection includes numerous paintings of Mount Fuji, making it one of the leading repositories of such works in the whole of Japan.
This exhibition introduces exemplary works from the museum holdings, focusing on paintings of Mount Fuji from the Edo period, as well as Muromachi period mandala pilgrimage works. These works communicate a sense of the Japanese regard and esteem for this most famed of mountains in the country.
