A.I.T. Lecture Series "Export of Japanese Art to Asia"

Tokyo Bunka Kaikan

This event has ended.

In recent years, we frequently see articles about Asian art dealers vigorously buying up Japanese artworks at galleries in Japan and auctions held in Asian countries. While the intensity and purpose of this phenomenon remains unclear, what is clear is that Japan had never experienced this before its art was exported to other Asian countries.
It seems unlikely that Japan will manage to avoid the decline in its stature as an Asian nation, especially in the military, political and economic arena. However, there still is a possibility of Japan retaining its cultural influence on others. In terms of assuring Japan's continued influence and presence in Asia, the demand for Japanese art among Asian nations is revealing. On the other hand, the present vogue for Japanese art seems largely speculative. This talk event was organized with the aim of giving closer attention to this ongoing phenomenon, both in order to be well-prepared for a possible future full-scale "export of Japanese art to Asia", as well as to attempt a search for "Asia's common base" in the art market.
