The Japan Art Institute was established in 1898 by Yokohama native Tenshin Okakura as a research group focusing on nihonga (Japanese style painting). The group spurred innovation in the genre while preserving its traditions, infusing an age-old genre with new life.

The Japan Art Institute Exhibition is an open call exhibition of nihonga painting that begins in Tokyo every September, before traveling across Japan.

This exhibition showcases a total of 88 paintings, bringing together works by the members of Japan Art Institute as well as pieces by artists who have close ties to Kanagawa.
