Kazuhiro Kuno was born in Aichi Prefecture in 1938 and moved to Tokyo at the age of 20 to pursue his career as a painter. He first entered the Western Painting department at Musashino Art University in 1961 but soon transferred to the sculpture department. As a research student, he went to the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1974. During this time, he encountered Giotto's painting at Musée du Louvre, immersing himself in creating reproduction of Giotto's work using tempera. Also in later years, he had another chance to visit Europe as a researcher funded by the Agency for Cultural Affairs, which largely influenced his creation.
Ever since 1977, Kuno has been teaching at Musashino Art University for more than 30 years. He has shown his work in major exhibitions, winning much acclaim as a leading figure in representational painting genre and contributing to the development of the art world.
This retrospective exhibition presents a total of 89 works by Kuno, including 43 oil paintings, sketches, sculpture, and works created while he was a student, all of which the artist himself selected for this show.
