Nobuyuki Okumura Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Takanawa Zakurozaka Gallery Ippodo
Media: Sculpture
Rome is the capital of art, filled with sculptures all around the city. Famous episode about the city is that a lot of artists ended up running away from there after realizing that it was impossible for them to surpass predecessors.
Nobuyuki Okumura moved to Rome in 1985 and studied under Emilio Greco. While contemporary style sculptures were prevailing in the area, Okumura set up his atelier in an ancient cave by the Lake Bracciano on the skirts of Rome. There, he has been producing his work applying ancient beeswax molding technique (Italian lost wax), which was first executed 3000 years ago in Greece and Rome. Among other works, one of the most prominent is the "Bust of John Paul II" Okumura created in 2003 to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Pope's reign. It is such an honor that this work is displayed alongside Bernini's at the St. Peters Cathedral in Vatican. Moreover, in 2006, he made a full-length statue of present Pope Benedict the 16th. It was the first feat not only among Japanese but also all Asian sculptors to be appointed to such an important role.
On display in this exhibition are this worldly renowned sculptor's magnificent works on the theme of "goddess and animals".
