Kikushima visited Mukojima on a photo shoot for the first time in 1976. Fascinated by the conversation he had with an old guy who told him that the area survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and the wars virtually intact, Kikushima has since made frequent visits there ever since.
A lot of old buildings and stores still remain standing in Mukojima's alleys. A variety of artisans making sliding doors, folding screens, bamboo bags and cork stoppers, as well as stone masons and tabi makers all continue to ply their trade here, helping to keep their local shopping streets crowded with people. Attracted to the denizens of this neighborhood in particular, Kikushima has taken their photographs, keenly aware that the lifestyles and customs from the Edo period still survive there. On the other hand, the area has nonetheless been suffering from today's sweeping tide of modernization, steadily losing its local flavor. This melancholy fact was a prime motivation for Kikushima to consolidate and exhibit his work at this exhibition.
