Media: Prints

In the late Meiji period, a new style of printmaking evolved, which was quite different from the previous Ukiyoe-style woodblock prints. It is called "Sosaku Hanga" (creative print). During this time, painters began to produce their own prints without the help of professional printmakers. From the Taisho to the early Showa periods, a number of printmaking magazines were published. Even in Fuchu, in Showa 28 (1953), Fuchu Printmaking Group was established by the members of Nihon Hanga In, Suekichi Munakata and Kihei Sasajima. Sousaku Hanga became a large art movement all over Japan.
Sousaku Hanga has a unique character that carries a sense of warmth. The prints were largely appreciated by the masses because of their humorous expressions. This exhibition is full of humor and warmth, characteristics that are original to Sousaku Hanga.
