Void+ is pleased to announce the opening of Kazutoshi Shimuta's "Torsohouse" exhibit from Saturday February 21 to March 21. Since presenting his single "Torsohouse" exhibit in 2005, Shimuta has exhibited numerous works of art based around this motif. Torsohouse is a plaster sculpture molded into a small house with an entrance and a hollow interior, but as the title indicates, it also represents a body.
At first glance, the new artwork presented at this exhibition appears similar to the Torsohouse that he exhibited previously. However, looking behind the piece reveals that three out of the six rectangular surfaces are missing. Also, the open interior is filled with colored shadows that spill out of the piece.
On the front wall of the gallery is "Flesh Window," a planar piece of artwork. As the title indicates, this work references Marcel Duchamp's "Fresh Widow." The window frames painted across the surface of the canvas can perhaps be seen as one object, while the transparent glass parts are colored black. What these shadows symbolize is an open question. The relationship between light and shadow and interior and exterior as presented in Shimuta's work reflects deep, intertwined meanings that add great mystery and reveal the complexity of the world in its primitive form.
