"Surrealism in Japan" Exhibition
This event has ended.
At Itabashi Art Museum
Media: Painting
This is the second half of a two-part exhibition commemorating the 30th anniversary of the opening of the museum, focusing on Japanese Surrealist works dating from the 1930s onwards. Surrealism originated in France in the 1920s, and its adherents depicted not visible reality, but rather subjects that transcended normal consciousness. In Japan, Surrealism was disseminated through art magazines, and artists developed their own interpretation of the movement.
On display are around 70 Japanese surrealist paintings dating from the prewar through to the postwar period.
