This event has ended.
At Japan Folk-Craft Museum
Media: Painting, Sculpture, Ceramics
Celebrating the 120th anniversary of the birth of Soetsu Yanagi, the initiator of Mingei Movement and founder of Japan Folk-Craft Museum, this special exhibition traces his achievements. Member of Shirakaba Group, Yanagi promoted a new concept of beauty "mingei (folk craft)" to the world at the end of the Taisho Period, elevating the beauty of utility to the realm of art for the first time. His unique mingei aesthetics, which revolved around concepts of well-being and practicality, developed as Mingei Movement that aspired for the "resurgence of folk craft" and "dissemination of beauty to the realm of everyday", resulting in the opening of Japan Folk-Craft Museum.
Dividing Yanagi's various accomplishments into 9 themes, including "'Shirakaba' and Mokujiki Buddha", "folk craft and individual artists" and "gaze to indigenous people", this exhibition showcases around 400 superb articles this aesthete collected from all over the world, alongside his autograph documents, manuscripts and beautifully-bound books of his own.
