Dye artist Kunihiko Moriguchi (1941-) was designated a Living National Treasure for his knowledge of Yuzen dyeing techniques in 2007. His father, Kako Moriguchi (1909-2008), passed away in February 2008. Although it was only for a short duration, father and son were the first couple in the history of traditional Japanese crafts to hold this status simultaneously.
The Moriguchi mastery of Yuzen dyeing displayed a bold design sense while maintaining a solid grasp of "makinori" techniques. While Kako was known for his majestic flower and bird motifs, the work of his son Kunihiko demonstrated innovative use of crisp geometric patterns. Together, their work was clear evidence of the continued inheritance of traditional Yuzen techniques and artistic innovation.
This exhibition attempts to survey the artistic evolution of two generations of Living National Treasure craftsmen through over 60 works.
