AAF started under the theme of "art festivals led by local citizens" with the support of Asahi Breweries Ltd. and art-related non profit organizations and citizen groups around Japan. Various art projects of many genres are conducted every summer, AAF has gradually evolved from a project centered around temporary events to a nationwide cooperative effort to revitalize local communities.
