Hans Coper (1920-81) is one of England's most prominent 20th century ceramic artists. Born into a Jewish family in Chemnitz, Germany, Coper moved to London in 1946 to work as an assistant to the ceramic artist Lucie Rie, another displaced exile from the continent. Coper's work is distinctive for its natural sensibility and architectural process of construction. This is the first large-scale retrospective exhibition of Coper's life and work in Japan, featuring tableware produced in collaboration with Lucie Rie, approaches to architectural and industrial design from the 1960s and more.
