The Power of Manga: Osamu Tezuka and Shotaro Ishinomori
This event has ended.
Dreams, hope, courage….the “power of manga” has the ability to move us in numerous ways. Manga has now come to reach a point of a globally conquering form of culture and it would not be an exaggeration to say that this position has been arrived at through the contributions of the “god of manga”, Osamu Tezuka , who greatly expanded the possibilities of this art form, and the “king of manga”, Shotaro Ishinomori, who in response to this came to push manga to a new level. Their highly distinctive work including unique characters, iconic images and narratives encompassing universal themes, continue even now to capture the imaginations of people far and wide. This exhibition, while reflecting upon the major works of these outstanding figures, including original sketches and animations from “Atom Boy”, “Black Jack”, “Cyborg 009” and “Kamen Rider”, will undertake to search out the very source of the “power of manga”. In addition to the artists’ original works, the exhibition will also feature a range of homage works from international young artists who have grown up under the influence of these two greats.
