“The Story of Kokubunji - From the Sumita Collection”

Renowned as a scholar of maritime history, as well as the history of law Shoji Sumita (1893-1968) was also a great researcher of historic tiles and during his life time traveled across Japan from Satsuma to Mutsu to form Japan’s leading collection of tiles from the “Kokubunji” state supported temples of the Nara period. This exhibition recalls the majesty of these temples and their pattern adorned tiling, along with information on the railway facilities of Sumita’s era.
