Aoi Sasai “Camellia”
This event has ended.
Born in 1986 Aoi Sasai, graduated from the painting course of Musashino Art University and held her first solo exhibition “Quercus” at Ando Gallery in 2012, in which she presented her wind bent trees set in a disquieting grey landscape to much acclaim. Since then she has gone on to present her work in the 2013 VOCA amongst other exhibitions, developing into a much anticipated young artist. The trees which form the central motif of her work are not the natural trees of mountains and forests but the plants and hedgerows found in gardens, trees raised by a human hand. In fact if one looks closely at these forms one may discern human features of appearing with head and hair, as if the trees are a symbol of a human presence. At the same time the grey background of her paintings is also highly distinctive, with the direction of brush marks suggesting the movement of wind and play of light. What this space holds remains unclear, but what is important here is the creation of a space which opens out beyond the trees. Through the continuous drawing of these trees which stand on the border of the self and the beyond, Sasai searches out the location of this border and attempts to grasp that further world. In this her second solo exhibition Sasai presents a series of 9 new paintings accompanied by 3 charcoal drawings.
