Welcome to Edo! Children of Ukiyo-e
This event has ended.
Ukiyo-e is renowned for its genres of bijinga, kabuki actors and landscapes but in fact the portrayal of children was also a highly popular theme for this historic art form and through these images we may discern attitudes towards children as well as wider cultural contexts in the Edo period. While children were well loved and given plenty of opportunity to play it is also clear that they were also subject to a vigorous education program from study at the temple to arts training. In this exhibition divided across six sections over 300 works from the Kumon Educational Japan group are featured providing insight into the so called “Children’s Paradise” of the late Edo era.
