Sumi, or Japanese ink, has been used for Oriental calligraphic works and paintings for over 2,000 years. The need for works of sumi, an art form backed by a long unbroken history, remains strong. Within the context of contemporary art, which is filled with an indiscriminate mix of materials and representational techniques, this exhibition specifically refers to sumi-based creations as works of “sumi_ism.” The works of six sumi artists are on display. The first ten visitors will receive a free “Sumi_ism” catalogue.
