Gibon Sengai was a Zen priest in later Edo period. Born in Mino he went through a rigorous training and itinerant priesthood, until becoming head of the Shofukuji temple. After removing from this position he came to live among the common people and became known as Sengai of Hakata and the calligraphic works he produced in this time not only offered up the teachings of zen but also revealed his sense of humor and softness.
