This event has ended.
Sasai was born in Kanagawa in 1986, and graduated from Musashino Art University’s Graduate School of Art and Design with a Master’s degree in Painting.
Sasai is highly praised for her unique vision of the world, characterized by the humorously-shaped trees blowing in the wind against a grey background. Sasai depicts familiar trees planted by human hands such as garden trees or hedges surrounding houses. The artist says that she is inspired by the trees planted for some purpose and well cared for, which she distinguishes from wild trees. Her new works marks the first time in two years in which the motif “trees” is the same as before, but her way of painting has changed significantly. While previously the hazy, enigmatic space behind the trees had been an important element for the artist, depicting how she sees trees as standing between this world and another world; her mind is currently directed towards the trees themselves.
The trees which she used to depict symmetrically in composition and somewhat symbolic in form are now depicted by leaving the texture and brush strokes, as if the trees themselves have an intention. The grey, disquieting background of earlier works has also been slightly touched with color, growing into a space of calm and warmth. The trees that used to be a symbol of separation and obscuration have developed an intimacy as she attaches significance to the previously symbolic form trees.
This exhibition, Sasai’s third solo-show, introduces eleven new oil paintings.
