Screening “Encyclopaedia Cinematografica: To Build a Dwelling”
This event has ended.
Encyclopaedia Cinematografica (EC) was an ambitious German project from 1952 to create an “encyclopaedia on film.” It created more than 3,000 titles documenting people’s lifestyles, customs, and plants and wildlife around the world, many of which were on the verge of extinction. One of the subjects it studied was “house building.” The Setagaya Culture Life Information Center screens EC footage of house-building practices when they were often a family or community event, with commentary by architect Keisuke Oka.
